* Olive oil, salt, pepper
* Fresh rosemary or tarragon sprigs
* 1 bunch kale, roughly torn
* Sala nova mix
* 2–3 stalks celery, sliced
* 1 citrus fruit, juiced
* Mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries)
instructions:
* Rub chicken quarters with olive oil, salt, and pepper
* Lay herbal sprigs over each piece
* Grill over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until charred and cooked through to 165°F (~35–45 min)
* Toss kale, sala nova, and celery together.

The fun field trips aren't just for kids around here! 🌱
We recently had the joy of hosting 16 older adults on the farm in partnership with @sloparksandrec Senior Center's programming for 55+ community members.
Our guests toured the farm, learning about regenerative agriculture along the way. Then we harvested ingredients straight from the field and cooked together — Ukrainian Beet Borscht, Rice Plov, and Kupas Salata. 🍲
Once prepared, we all shared a meal at the table. Everyone said they learned a lot during their visit to City Farm SLO — and we loved every minute of it.

The awaited return of 'Regenerative Roasters' happens Saturday 2/21, and what is a Regenerative Roaster, you might ask? Regeneratively raised City Farm chickens, harvested and frozen locally. Our Regenerative Roasters were grown with care on our organic pastures, rotating onto fresh cover crop daily. They foraged freely and contributed to soil health through fertilization. Every chicken was carefully and intentionally harvested to honor the animal and the land. Regenerative Roasters are sold whole, frozen.

These are the same kind of bird that had a professional butcher comparing it to wild game for its color, texture, and nutrient density.

One whole chicken, endless meal possibilities: Roast it Sunday, shred the leftovers for tacos Monday, simmer the bones into broth by Tuesday. Real food from a real farm, raised right here in SLO.

We’ll kick things off with a guided farm tour to soak up the last of the daylight, then roll up our sleeves under the pergola to harvest, prep, and cook a delicious meal — straight from farm to plate. Finally, we’ll gather around the table to share and enjoy what we’ve created. 🌱🍽️

Open to all families with students in grades K–12.

Since the 1950s, the USDA has tracked the nutrient content of 43 main US crops. Since that time, average nutrient content has decreased alarmingly: vitamin C declined by 20 percent, iron by 15 percent, riboflavin by 38 percent, calcium by 16 percent. You now have to eat three apples to get the same amount of iron as you would have gotten from an apple in 1940.

“American agriculture’s single minded focus on increasing yields created a blind spot, where incremental erosion in the nutritional quality of our food… has largely escaped the notice of scientists, government, and consumers.” (Brian Halweil)

There are two reasons for the decline in nutrient density in the industrialized food system: changes in the way we grow food and changes in the kinds of food we grow.

City Farm (and many, many others) are doing things differently. Our practices revitalize soils, which leads to more nutrient-dense plants and healthier, more balanced ecosystems….Restoring health to soils, land, plants, and people.

Campers loved our first-ever Thanksgiving Break Camp! 🦃

Our campers planted seeds, tended the education garden, and harvested fresh kale and broccolini for their lunches. They learned how to care for our animals (the egg laying chickens were a particular favorite), explored native plants in Prefumo Creek, and even performed a farm-inspired talent show for our City Farm Staff.

🌾City Farm is introducing cover crops this winter! These crops will contribute to nutrient cycling on the farm, helping regenerate our soil and create healthy ecosystems. We are planting peas, oats, and vetch. When terminated, the crops’ organic matter is added back to the soil as mulch.

Sequoia is our Farm Education Coordinator where she leads a team of educators working to inspire the next generation of young learners. She joined City Farm SLO in 2024 and instantly fell in love with the beauty of the farm, the welcoming community, and the joy of working with kids outdoors. In addition to her skillful leadership of our youth programs, she's constantly boosting morale on the farm and making our team laugh.

🏔️ Outside of work, Sequoia can be found mountain biking, backpacking, and trail running. We’re so grateful to have her on the team!

🌟Meet Samantha Xu! 🌟

Samantha is a Cal Poly Dietetic Intern currently completing her Community Nutrition rotation at City Farm SLO. During her time here, she's learned so much about regenerative farming and sustainable nutrition. This experience has given her the opportunity to harvest fresh produce, perform bed flips, explore crop rotation, and even participate in animal husbandry.

Samantha says, "one of my favorite parts of this rotation has been facilitating school field trips, where we guide students on farm tours and offer them a chance to taste a variety of freshly harvested fruits and vegetables. These hands-on experiences have deepened my understanding of the connection between food systems and nutrition education. As a future dietitian, I believe that understanding where our food comes from is essential to providing the best possible care and guidance to our patients."

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with my dog, backpacking, cooking, reading, and doing arts and crafts.

This Saturday, we'll have our pasture-raised Navajo Churro lamb and pasture-raised chicken broilers alongside all your favorite fruits and veggies.

Our animals are grown with care on our regenerative farm. Our sheep and chickens are raised on organic pasture, regularly rotating onto fresh cover crop. They play an integral role in our regenerative practices by helping develop healthy soils and pastures. Every animal is carefully and intentionally harvested to honor the animal and the land.

All proceeds from our sales directly support City Farm SLO’s youth education programs, empowering local students to connect with food, farming, and the natural world.

Welcome Catrina Sada, City Farm SLO's new Community Programs Coordinator! Catrina was born and raised in San Luis Obispo and recently graduated from UCSB with a degree in Environmental Studies. Learning at UCSB and living in a housing cooperative strengthened her belief in the power of community to make transformative change. School programs are back in full swing at City Farm SLO!

Last month, we welcomed new learners for Farm Field Trips, Therapeutic Horticulture Sessions, and Regenerative Farming Classes — kicking off a season of hands-on learning and discovery.

This school year, we’re thrilled to host 40 Kindergarten–5th Grade classrooms from across SLO County! Students will explore plant parts, pollination, and soil science, learning about the land and resources that grow their food. 🌾

Each visit helps young learners leave the farm with a deeper appreciation for where their food comes from — and a sense of connection to the earth that sustains us all. 💚

Today, students in our Therapeutic Horticulture program cooked up some delicious brunch tacos featuring the three sisters (beans, squash, and corn!)🌽

Students also harvested fresh tomatoes and cilantro, then worked on their chopping skills to prepare a pico de gallo to enjoy with their tacos. Our staff were excited to taste test…. It was a 5 star dish! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When children and young adults participate in growing fruits and vegetables, they are much more likely to eat them! Even our “picky” eaters joined the feast today 🍅

As summer crops wind down and fall plantings begin, our team is busy mapping out next year’s crop plan. With more growing space than ever, careful planning helps us keep the farm thriving year-round. We’re also shifting toward crops that both thrive here and meet customer demand. This winter we’ll grow more baby kale and lettuce (favorites that always sell out) and add extra successions of cherry tomatoes to extend their season. Each year our systems get sharper, and 2026 is shaping up to be our most abundant season yet!

Meet one of our Regenerative Farming Interns, Gabrielle Rojo!

Gabrielle is a fourth year student at Cal Poly, majoring in Environmental Management and Protection and minoring in Sustainable Agriculture, Land Rehabilitation and Restoration Ecology, and Sustainable Environments. Her interest in sustainable food systems and eagerness to gain deeper knowledge of regenerative agricultural practices led her to City Farm. She has been an amazing asset to our farm team, and we’ve been so happy to have her with us this summer!
