Junior Farmers Summer Camp was tons of fun! 🌞

Our students transplanted beets, lettuce, snow peas, and flowers into our Garden for All, learned about monarch butterfly metamorphosis and the importance of milkweed as habitat, and got to harvest zucchinis, grapes, and tomatoes to enjoy! 🧑‍🌾 👩‍🌾

They spent more time caring for our chickens and sheep, learned about the San Luis Obispo watershed, and cooled off from the summer sun in both the hose and the creek!💧 They also loved playing so many camp games. Having junior farmers on the farm was such a treat! 🌱

We’re looking forward to our upcoming After School Programs on Tuesdays & Thursdays— keep an eye out for more information! #juniorfarmers #farmcamp #regenerative #futurefarmers

The 2025 Youth Empowerment Program was one for the books!

On Thursday, we closed out our final week of YEP with a graduation and potluck celebration for cohort 15! 🌞

We were so impressed by the engagement with all of the material we covered in two short weeks, and we are so excited for them to grow as young adults during their next chapters! 🪴

During week 2 of cohort 15, we harvested more tomatoes and zucchinis, learned the difference between invasive and native riparian species and how to restore creeks for the health of our watersheds💧, traveled to Cal Poly to learn about entomology and the challenges with pests in the strawberry industry 🪰🍓, and learned about the abundance and diversity of careers in agriculture. 🫜🧑‍🌾

As a result of the program,
🤝92% have made more friends and feel more confident in their ability to make new friends

🧑‍🏫 92% say they are more of a leader

We are excited to announce that our Therapeutic Horticulture sessions are extending into the summer this year thanks to the generous support of our Corporate Partner, Nuveen Natural Capital. @nuveeninv

During summer sessions, students work alongside our farm instructors to complete farm tasks such as harvesting, watering and animal care. In doing so, students are honing their gross and fine motor skills, social and communication skills, emotional regulation abilities, and vocational confidence.

This week, we enjoyed harvesting cherry tomatoes and prepared a bruschetta together! Students loved preparing a little extra to share with the chickens 😆

During summer sessions, students work alongside our farm instructors to complete farm tasks such as harvesting, watering and animal care. In doing so, students are honing their gross and fine motor skills, social and communication skills, emotional regulation abilities, and vocational confidence.

This week, we enjoyed harvesting cherry tomatoes and prepared a bruschetta together! Students loved preparing a little extra to share with the chickens 😆

During our Therapeutic Horticulture sessions this week, students enjoyed creating a new twist of ants on a log-- They used farm-grown celery and raspberries paired with sun butter to create a fresh, nutritious snack 🐜🪵

When our students participate in growing fruits and vegetables, they feel much more comfortable and excited to eat them!

🌱Faces of City Farm SLO - Meet Jenna!

Jenna is a master's student and dietetic intern at Cal Poly SLO studying to be a registered dietitian, specializing in functional nutrition. Her studies have deepened her appreciation for food origins, leading her to delve into regenerative farming that cultivates a reciprocal and healing relationship with the land and fosters a stronger sense of community. She enjoys learning more about sustainable food systems at City Farm and the vital role soil health plays in growing nutrient-dense foods.

Jenna has jumped right into Education Programs here at City Farm, infusing Farm Field Trips and Therapeutic Horticulture sessions with hands-on cooking activities and nutrition lessons. This week, she led a Rainbow Rolls cooking activity using only City Farm ingredients... and the students LOVED it! 🌈

Tomato Season is Almost Here! 🌞

We’re growing twice as many tomato plants this season—and we couldn’t be more excited! Tomatoes are one of our most popular crops, so we’re maximizing production to keep up with the love. 🍅

You'll see the return of favorites like beefsteaks, red slicers, three types of large heirlooms, and a colorful variety of cherry tomatoes: Sun Peach, Blush, Sakura, Citrine—and new this year, Yellow Mini, a sweet yellow cherry that will brighten up our mixed pints!

We start all our tomatoes from seed in January, and by May or June, they’ll be ready for harvest. The wait is worth it—we promise. 🙌
