Introducing the Rooted in SLO Award 🌱🏆

This is the very first time we’ve given this honor, and 2026 is the United Nations’ International Year of the Woman Farmer, so our first Rooted in SLO award celebrates a woman or nonbinary leader who has helped grow a healthier, more connected SLO County through farming, food, and education.

Women are 38% of California’s farmers in a field that’s still mostly men, and City Farm SLO is proud to be a female-led farm in that shift. This is the year to lift up the people doing this work right alongside us. 👩‍🌾

Nominees join us as celebrated guests at our 2nd Annual Farm Games Hoedown, Saturday, August 15 at Rancho Toro y Oso in San Luis Obispo, 5:00 to 8:30 PM.

🌟 What it feels like to realize a vision four years in the making! 🌟 This structure is the result of a long, sometimes dramatic, effort that started in 2022. This is where food moves from the field into the community—washed, packed, and prepared for families, schools, and our farm stand. It will allow us to scale production, maintain quality, and actually get more local food into people’s hands. It also allows more space for our education programs to expand—we aren’t washing and packing vegetables in our outdoor classroom anymore!

Open Farm Days is a special weekend presented by @farmsteaded where 20+ farms, ranches, and producers across SLO County open their gates for a self-guided weekend of tastings, demos, and tours. City Farm SLO is a proud stop on the trail! City Farm SLO will be open Saturday, June 20th from 10am - 3pm with several activities planned:

👩‍🌾 Our Pay-What-You-Can Farm Stand will be open and sampling multiple items from our City Farmer Collaborative
🌻 Free Farm Tours Starting at 10am and 11am - learn the regenerative methods we use to grow food
🐏 Visit our sheep and watch the lambs frolic!
🍗 A special farm-to-table cooking expeirence with Chef Laurie Jo (details below, link in our bio)

$45 per person includes

A ~1 hour farm-to-table cooking experience led by Guest Chef Laurie Jo
A live cooking demonstration with tips for cooking with fresh, local ingredients
A shared farm lunch featuring roasted City Farm whole chicken and seasonal vegetables along with non-alcoholic beverages
An optional farm tour at 11:00 AM before the class to learn about the regenerative farming methods used to grow the ingredients
Cook, taste, and savor the farm! Join us at City Farm for a relaxed, hands-on cooking experience led by Guest Chef Laurie Jo, where we’ll prepare a delicious farm-to-table meal using the freshest organic ingredients grown right here on the farm. Together, we’ll roast a City Farm whole chicken and transform seasonal vegetables into a simple, flavorful dish that celebrates the bounty of the season.

The class will include a cooking demonstration, and plenty of tips for cooking with fresh, local ingredients. After we cook, we’ll gather around the table to enjoy the meal together in a beautiful farm setting. A refreshing non-alcoholic drink is included with the meal.

Recommended for ages 12 and up, but all ages are welcome.

Farm Cook Night: This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone in the community, families, individuals, and friends, to come together and learn about the benefits of farm-fresh produce and where your food comes from. We will begin with a farm tour then cook together under our well-lit pergola.

Day Retreat: Join Farmer Caroline & Herbalist Hannah (of Wild Trek Wellness) for Tending to the Earth Body: A Day Retreat at City Farm SLO. A day for the Women & Mothers of the Central Coast — woven together with herbal medicine, community care, & floral harvests. Steep in this season of early Spring, waxing to Summer, on the land that tends us so well. You’ll return home with a nourished heart & belly, a well-tended body & spirit, and in ever-deepening connection to the land we call home, and the community we get to share this life and days with (along with a handful of floral crafts, fresh flowers, & herbal remedies).

The Junior Farmers Summer Camp is a hands-on, outdoor experience where kids connect with land, their food, and each other. Campers will dig into gardening, care for farm animals, explore compost and soil life, and harvest fresh produce for farm-to-table snacks and lunch. Each day includes age-appropriate farm chores, interactive lessons on sustainable agriculture, and time for games, crafts, and nature-based play.

Olive Oil 101: Join us at City Farm SLO for a hands-on introduction to olive oil with local producer Vance Rogers of Obispo Olive Oil. A retired physician turned olive grower, Vance produces small-batch, award-winning olive oil right here in San Luis Obispo County—recently earning a silver medal from the California Olive Oil Council.

This little "bottle baby" will be Tucker’s apprentice. She will grow up closely bonded to our team and community. Because of that, she'll play a special role in our youth education programs—meeting students, helping kids feel comfortable around animals, and serving as a hands-on ambassador for farm-based learning.

Did you know City Farm sits along Prefumo Creek and a prominent flood plain? From a farming perspective, flood plains are one of nature’s most generous gifts.

Flood plains are the low-lying areas alongside rivers and streams that naturally fill with water during heavy rain, along with some temporary inconvenience come a lot of benefit to our soil and crops.

Floodwaters deposit nutrient-rich sediment, recharge groundwater, filter runoff, and support the kind of biodiversity that healthy ecosystems depend on. For thousands of years, farmers built their livelihoods on flood plain soil because it’s some of the most fertile ground on the planet. Regenerative agriculture is, in a lot of ways, about remembering that, working with it, and doing our best as a community to make sure our floodplains and waterways stay clear of pollutants

Remember that foam in the video? It’s usually plant matter breaking down and creating a natural soap that breaks surface tension in the water, but it can also be caused by synthetic cleaning chemicals and fertilizer that is harmful to natural habitats for fish, birds, insect life, soil, and more.

In a single year, our collaborative farmers produced well over 115,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables for our local food system. That food reaches our community through school districts, farmers markets, the food bank, and our own farm stand — all grown regeneratively, right here in SLO by people who have dedicated their lives to it.

To Frank, Jerry, Nathan, Erin, Hali, Tree, Cyrus, our College Corps Fellows, Interns and Volunteers: thank you for the work you do. We're honored to steward this land with you.

In preparation for establishing a beef herd of our own, City Farm SLO partnered with our friends at @avenalesranch to source our first animal. This beef is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, raised on organic pastures using regenerative grazing practices that prioritize soil health, animal welfare, and ecosystem stewardship. The ranch is GAP Step-4 certified and Audubon Certified, reflecting a commitment to high standards for both humane treatment of animals and protection of wildlife habitat.
When most people picture beef production, they picture feedlots, and the environmental concerns that come with them are real. But regenerative ranching is a fundamentally different system. Grasslands evolved alongside grazing animals. The movement of herds stimulates root growth, cycles nutrients back into the soil, and supports the kind of biodiversity that makes landscapes resilient.
